Default Master P Interview - Talks about Lil Wayne's comments made on No Limit - 10-14-2008, 12:05 PM

Words by Damon Brown

Best known as Master P, Percy Miller started the seminal New Orleans label No Limit Records fifteen years ago. Along with Cash Money Records, it laid the foundation for NoLa hip hop and became a home for Mystikal, Mia X and Miller’s little brothers, Silkk The Shocker & C-Murder. The 41-year-old multimillionaire recently created Better Black TV, a new black and Latino network set to launch next year.

SupremeMag.com - You’ve been in the game for a while. What have you been up to recently?

Master P- Working on launching this network for the past five years. It is a passion of mine. Definitely challenging. A lot of money is spent by our people, a lot of money spent based on our culture, but there isn’t a lot of African-American programming for families. People always say ‘We want something better for our kids,’ so now we need your support. We only have one or two African-American channels catering to our culture – look at others and you see 10, 20, even 30 channels. We have no options.

SupremeMag.com - Tell me more about Better Black TV.

Master P- We want to have programming to the diverse 18 – 34 year old audience. We have a lot of 18 – 34 year olds that have families, being responsible individuals… which is a demographic they say doesn’t exist.

SupremeMag.com - But some of your earlier material as a rapper and with No Limit talked about violence and specifically murder. What changed?

Master P- I grew up. My vision is bigger. In my music career, I was a boy. Now I’ve been exposed to a lot. When I came out of the ghetto, I didn’t know any better. Now I made Lil’ Romeo do better – I learned from my actions and gave what I learned to my son. Now I hope to give insight to other families. If you’re sitting in the ghetto, talking about you run your block in the hood – you lost.

I did film, did clothing, and now I’m taking it to the next level. LeBron wants to be the next MJ. I want to be the next Bob Johnson [creator and former owner of Black Entertainment Television]. Now I have an African-American network. If I was still out there doing records, I wouldn’t be growing.

SupremeMag.com - Both No Limit and Cash Money Records grew up together in the New Orleans hip-hop scene, and, as you probably heard, Lil’ Wayne recently called No Limit a bad label. What are your thoughts on that?

Master P- We’ve made money together. We’ve always rooted for each other – competition within New Orleans, but stood together on the outside. We’re not taking money from each other.

As African-Americans, you get people making comments on things they don’t know nothing about. Can’t believe everything. You can only get part of the story.

SupremeMag.com -I actually used to live down in New Orleans, just a ways off the French Quarter. How are things down there?

Master P -[I live in California now, but] there is a long way to go. We were already in a rebuilding stage before Katrina. Now we’re getting plenty of support since others see the positives – so much culture and heritage, so much opportunity. I’d give us three to five years and we’ll be in a better place. Fingers crossed.
