RICHMOND, Calif. -- A second suspect in the brutal rape and beating of a 15-year-old Richmond High student after a homecoming dance was taken into custody by police Monday as the investigation into what the Richmond Police Chief described as a sickening crime continued.

Police detectives arrived at Richmond High Monday afternoon and took a male freshman student into custody as a person of interest. By Monday evening, authorities were calling that the student a suspect facing charges of robbery, false imprisonment, rape and other sex crimes.

Police are appalled by the nature of the vicious attack.

“I remember thinking that it's like something out of a Hollywood movie,” said Richmond Police spokesman Lt. Mark Gagan. “It's so extremely vicious and absolutely unnecessary.”

The 15-year-old victim left her on-campus homecoming dance around 9:30 p.m. Saturday night and walked with someone she knew to a secluded area on the north end of campus where she may have had some alcohol.

Soon afterwards, the teen was robbed, gang-raped, and beaten severely for over two hours.

Police said the attack was witnessed by up to a dozen people and may have even been caught on video with cell phones.

“Their behavior was either apathy -- to not get involved and not call us -- to sit there and observe it, or in some cases to get involved in it and commit crimes,” explained Gagan.

Richmond High junior Linda Orozco expressed concerns about campus safety that were echoed by many other students and their parents,

“We need more security or something,” said Orozco. “I don't know. I don't think I'm going to be coming to any dances. I think I just want to move from Richmond High and go to Vista.”

“It's not safe,” agreed Richmond High parent Osa De Leon. “I think they should have more security. The people that work for security, they are not doing the right thing.”

School board trustee Charles Ramsey said a new school surveillance system that's going in by january might have caught the crime earlier.

“Absolutely, because it's tied in to local law enforcement,” said Ramsey. “It would have had a more visual view of what was going on and people would have been alerted.”

The West Contra Costa Unified School District spokesman took what seemed to be a more cavalier attitude about the incident.

“Our assumption is that when parents bring the kids to the school, to the dance, that they also arrange for a safe ride back,” said spokesman Marin Trujillo. “If kids wish to leave the dance in the middle of the dance, we assume they have a safe ride back. There's a limit to what we can do.”

Four police officers, three administrators and several additional teachers were at the school to chaperone the dance, according to Trujillo. He noted that there were no incidents during the dance and officials closed the event at 11.

Trujillo also said counselors were at the school Monday to help students cope with the incident, but that classes were held as scheduled.

The victim was airlifted to a local hospital in critical condition. Her condition has since been upgraded to stable. Police said the victim suffered from non-life-threatening physical injuries but substantial emotional trauma.

19-year-old Manuel Ortega, a former student at Richmond High, was arrested shortly after the incident. He faces charges of rape, robbery and false imprisonment in the case. His bail has been set at $800,000

Police were continuing their search for five other people, but said that number could grow as the investigation unfolds.
