A five-hour standoff in which a shooting suspect barricaded himself inside a Pleasant Hill home ended just before 4 p.m. Sunday when the suspect came outside armed with an assault rifle and was shot dead by a SWAT officer, police said.
The incident began around 10:50 a.m. after Pleasant Hill police responded to a report of shots fired on Audrey Lane, police said.
Officers arrived and found a man armed with a rifle at a house on Audrey Lane. The man fired shots at the officers, but none were struck, according to police.
He then barricaded himself inside the home and a shelter-in-place was issued for residents on Christine and Audrey courts, as well as on Audrey and Baylor lanes.
During the standoff, a male victim with two minor gunshot wounds checked himself into an area hospital. He is believed to be a known associate of the man involved in the standoff, and has since been released, police said.
Authorities made attempts throughout the day to try to contact the man inside the home and negotiate with him.
Officers used a loudspeaker and other diversionary devices to try to gain his cooperation but were unsuccessful. The man fired at the officers multiple times, police said.
Shortly before 4 p.m., tear gas was placed in the house and the suspect responded by firing out the door at the officers, according to police.
The man then came out the back door with an assault rifle and was shot by a SWAT officer, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Pleasant Hill Police Department, the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office and the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office were investigating the incident.
